The Cultural Significance of Trump’s Bankruptcies

Overview: Trump being linked to multiple bankruptcy filings, then becoming President of the United States has normalized filing bankruptcy for the rest of us.

The year is 2024. We are in another Presidential election year, and another showdown between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. In election years, we start to hear all sorts of “facts” about the candidates; some good, some bad, some true, some false. Something we often hear about are Former President Trump’s bankruptcies. Indeed, I wrote a blog about Trump’s bankruptcies a few years ago.

I don’t want to get into the details of his bankruptcies, but I do want to get into the cultural significance of them:

I have now been practicing consumer bankruptcy law for 10 years (began in 2014). I have advised thousands of clients. One thing is certain: There is a stigma to bankruptcy.

But when Donald Trump rose to international fame by becoming the 45th President of the United States, he normalized filing bankruptcy. He showed the regular civilians like me and you that you can be successful before and after bankruptcy.

Trump is a Billionaire, business titan, TV personality, celebrity, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, etc. And he is linked to multiple bankruptcy filings. “Multiple bankruptcies”?!  An icon of success, and President of the United States is linked to multiple bankruptcies? Yes, absolutely, and the bankruptcies assisted him along the way.

In fact, his connection to the bankruptcy code should show the rest of our society that you can be successful before and after filing bankruptcy. Indeed, some would argue that bankruptcy FACILITATES success because it removes a level of fear in the decision-making process.

Trump’s bankruptcies illustrate that the bankruptcy laws are designed to help you out of the tough situation you’re in. Filing bankruptcy doesn’t mean you failed in the past, or that you will fail in the future. Instead, the bankruptcy code is a tool to help eliminate your debts, and earn a fresh start for the rest of your life.
