COVID Bankruptcy Filing Numbers: 2019 vs. 2025

2019 was the last full year before COVID. I am writing this article in October, 2025, so I have access to the filing numbers through the 3rd quarter (september) of 2025.

Total cases filed through September (chapter 7 + Chapter 13):

·       2019: 13,229 (Avg: 1,469/mo)
·       2025: 8,869 (Avg: 985/mo)

·       = 32.95% decrease between 2019 and 2025

Approximately 1,000 people per month utilize bankruptcy (in the Southern District of Ohio) to regain control of their financial situations. I expect that hundreds of more could benefit, and lower theirs and their families’ stress levels, if they knew all the benefits that bankruptcy offered.
