The Cost of Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

As is often the case with my blog, I’m trying to combat the many misconceptions about filing bankruptcy. In this month’s blog, the misconception is regarding the cost of filing Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.

This USA Today article states that the “Total attorney fees for Chapter 7 bankruptcy typically range between $1,500 and $3,000…”

FICTION: The average Chapter 7 Bankruptcy costs $1,500 - $3,000

FACT: I charge between $975 - $1,300 for most of my Chapter 7 Bankruptcies. In rare, more complex cases my fee will exceed $1,300; the increased fee accounts for the additional time it takes to research and prepare the case to file, and the additional time necessary for post-filing matters.

I’m always discouraged when I hear the myriad of misconceptions about filing bankruptcy, but to see an actual printed article in USA Today spreading these misconceptions is especially discouraging.
