Bankruptcy & The Bible (Deuteronomy 15)
I wrote a similar blog about 8 years ago when I first opened my law practice, but I think it’s time to bring this idea back to the surface:
Believe it or not, the ideas behind bankruptcy are found in pretty clear terms in the Bible. Deuteronomy 15 starts: “At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts.” Deuteronomy 15 outlines a powerful biblical principle: debt forgiveness every seven years. This "year of release" commands creditors to cancel debts, ensuring that financial hardship does not become a life sentence. While this passage isn’t directly referring to a formal bankruptcy system, the passage reflects the same values behind modern bankruptcy—a reset for those overwhelmed by debt. Just as Deuteronomy emphasized mercy, dignity, and second chances, bankruptcy laws today aim to give honest debtors a fresh start. Both the Bible and today’s US Bankruptcy code recognize the human cost of unending financial bondage; they both remind us that a healthy society gives its members a chance to rebuild.
